Games Mascot - the 2006 Games Symbol

Definition

A mascot is a person, animal, or object believed to bring good luck, especially one kept as the symbol of an organization such as a sports team (according to www.dictionary.com).

The mascot of the 2006 Commonwealth Games is the South Eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo named 'Karak'.

The Mascot Description

The South Eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is smaller than the rest of the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo. The female birds are brightly coloured, and have different eating habits.

The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is an endangered bird. There are less than 1000 of them left. This is mainly because their habitats are destroyed. Around 60% of the habitats in Victoria and 80% of the habitats in South Australia have been lost.

They feed on the seeds of Brown Stringybarks and Bulokes, and they nest in old River Red Gums or Yellow Gums.
